Role
Editor, Producer, Assistant Director,
Jeni, a mother of two, recounts her son’s lifelong struggle with an undiagnosed condition. The documentary spans several years of Ben’s childhood and captures the resilience and hope that ultimately led to a diagnosis, bringing a sense of control to the family’s daily lives.
The documentary aimed to re-discover Ben’s experience during his childhood. We wanted to evoke Ben’s emotions through experimental filmmaking, not recreate his experience. I think we succeeded in this.
Working as an editor was both challenging and rewarding. The documentary was created through three rounds of interviews. These interviews were transcribed and used to write a script. This timestamped script was then edited into a visual version. Since this was a university assignment, the process was quite demanding. After editing the script into a visual timeline, it needed to be shortened, as it exceeded the 8-minute assignment limit (by 8 minutes).
I began the creative editing process once I had a version under 8 minutes. I added visual codes to convey additional layers of meaning and used them to enhance the established themes. Handing the film over for sound design was satisfying, as I was proud of the story I had crafted through the editing process. The film then underwent a second round of editing and sound design to incorporate feedback from the lecturers.
