LEAL – Drive and Naming Conventions

This will explain the drive system I’ve created and the file naming conventions. More importantly, it will show the benefit of the naming conventions.

The naming conventions are as follow:

The applicability of the naming conventions is when multiple documents are open at the same time.

This screenshot shows what happens when you have various documents opened at the same time. A similar view is when working on files within the internet. E.G

Both examples show the name of the file being cut off. But the important details, Date, file number and location in drives is always visible. Because it comes first.

This avoids the opposite that would be:

chole character version 2
team members 09.06.25 2nd version
leal shared 25.05.10 outline, second version
meeting notes Monday 2nd October

As you can see, the dates are mixed, the versions are confusing, and it’s harder to determine what the files are.

However, when compared to my conventions. It doesn’t matter what the document name is; you already know its place within the drive through the numbers at the beginning. Even when in person, it’s easier to say.

‘Yeah, its in 1.4.02’

instead of

Yeah, it’s named Outline 2.Final in the outline folder in the pre-productions folder.’

Numbers are more efficient and effective. No two documents are numbered the same – unless it’s a document with various saves done on the same day. In which a number will demonstrate the difference at the end of the name. But this is expected to be in very limited circumstances.

This blog demonstrates why naming conventions are needed and the benefit of the ones I have decided upon.
